Organic bacterial cellulose grown on coconut water waste
A bio-leather made with organic and renewable bacterial cellulose in coconut water waste. The word ‘Malai’ refers to the white coconut flesh; coconut water sustains bacteria whilst producing cellulose, which is collected and refined until it becomes the finished material: Malai. It can be produced in sheets with a range of thicknesses. Also available as seamless three-dimensional moulded objects. Malai is available in a range of colours achieved through the use of mordant-free natural dyes, and it can develop a soft sheen or patina over time.
